Walter Edward McConkey, Sr, age 75, went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 11, 2023. He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Nancy, of 53 years. He was the beloved dad of Walter Jr. (Trudy) and Shawn (Krista); loving Grampie to Katie (Micheal) Kellogg, Jared (Lindsey), Keri Jean (Ben) Hidy, Julia, Cody, Collin (Rachel), Schuyler, and Carrie-Grace; Great Grampie to Peyton, Haylee, Emily, Sylvia, Jason, and Tucker; brother of Rick (Marlene) McConkey, Jr., Judy (Mike) Priest, Dana (Anita) McConkey, Scott (Shirley Jo) McConkey, and Brett (Stacy) McConkey; sisters-in-law, Linda (Gary) Dearborn and Ludi Drowns, and “Uncle Walt” to many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard (Shirley) McConkey, Sr. and Phyllis McConkey, and his brother, John McConkey. Walter was born in Casco, Maine. He graduated from Bridgton High School in 1966 and came to know the Lord in December, 1973. He felt the Lord’s calling and in 1977 enrolled in New Brunswick Bible Institute to enter ministry. He pastored several churches in Maine and moved to Michigan in 1989 to attend Grand Rapids Baptist College (now Cornerstone University). In 1992, he and Nancy accepted the call to Fenton Bible Church in Fenton, MI, and pastored there for 22 years. Following retirement, Pastor Walt served on the pastoral staff at First Baptist Church in Fenton, MI. He was a skilled woodworker and crafted under the label “The Carpenter’s Helper.” He enjoyed telling a good story. He and Nancy treasured spending time with their family and enjoyed camping and traveling. He will be greatly missed by all who love him. His life verse from Scripture was Philippians 1:21: “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
