Shirley J. (Gorby) Spence

Mrs. Shirley J. Spence, age 79, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, June 1, 2020.  She was born Nov. 29, 1940 in Marietta, OH to Glenn W. Gorby and Dorothy J. (Noble) Gorby and moved to Barryton, MI in early childhood. Raised her family in Portland MI and retired in Newaygo, MI then spent the last 10 years in Manton MI.  Shirley was a 1959 graduate of Barryton High School. She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart Harold A. Spence, for 40 years. He preceded her in death in 2002.  Shirley worked for the State Police as a secretary for 30 plus years and retired in 1995. She enjoyed her time there and made many lasting friendships. She also enjoyed, motorcycling, snowmobiling, golfing, bowling, euchre, bingo and the casinos.   Shirley is survived by her daughters, Janet (Terry) Williams, Fenton, MI. Sharon Spence, Haslett, MI.  Sister, Marianne Gorby of Springfield, MO. Grandchildren, Ryan (Megan) Vroman, Portland MI, Tiffany Vroman, Warsaw IN. Step Grandchildren, Christa (Cameron) Plew, Warsaw IN, Jeremiah (Shannon) Williams, Elkhart, IN and many Great grandchildren, Nieces & Nephews. Significant other Paul Galloway, Manton MI.  She was preceded in death by, both of her parents, Sister Marilyn Cramer, Brother James Gorby. Brother in law, Jesse Spence.  A memorial will be held on Saturday, June 20^th at Noon to 3:00 pm at The Wagon Wheel in Portland MI.  A special thanks to her Niece, Debbie Mikkelson for her care in her final days.
