Mrs. Nuala C. Scroggins “Johnnie” age 86, died November 3, 2025 at home in Byron, MI. Johnnie was born in Webster Springs, West Virginia in Possum Holler, which was the next Holler over from Butcher Holler where Loretta Lynn grew up to parents Oscar (Jack) and Beulah Brady. They raised 6 children there while Jack struggled working in the coal mines. They decided to move to MI and get a new start. While there, Johnnie met Lawrence Bannerman, and they married in 1956. Together they raised 4 children. They divorced in 1980 she remarried in 1981 to Mervall (Mert) Scroggins who had 4 children from his first marriage. They remained together til his passing of cancer in 2010.
Johnnie with her Southern roots was a helluva cook and her fried chicken, potato salad, and yeast rolls were legendary. She even made fried chicken for the dogs to the point that people would come in evening, hoping to get a portion of her “dog food”! Holidays were filled with Ham and Turkey with all the fixins, pies, cookies, cakes, etc. If you left her table hungry, it was your fault. She would have fed the World if she could have. She was known for taking in strays and fattening them up and giving them life, whether it was 2 or 4 legged. Her fondness and ability to relate to the unfortunate and needy came from a soft place in her heart for the unfortunate. She seemed to have a clairvoyance of knowing what each individual needed and would sometimes go without herself to make sure they were taken care of. Her ability to make everyone feel like family even led to many of her childrens ex’s stopping by to visit their “Mum” even many years after no longer dating one of her children.
Johnnie was a farmer’s daughter and wife her whole life. She had a green thumb for plants and gardens and was equally adept at putting up hay. While married to Lawrence they sharecropped other peoples farms for awhile then started custom baling hay for others. That meant that Johnnie and her kids cut, raked, and baled while Lawrence worked at gravel pit and then he would fix equipment or stack wagons with them when he came home. She always canned, froze, and cured food for her family and the Byron house was always filled with canned goods in case a moment arose that it was needed. She never smoked or drank. Her only vice was the casino, and she did love her casino!
Johnnie was proceeded in death by her parents Jack and Beulah, both her husbands Lawrence and Mert, and all 3 of her sisters, Shirley, Sharon, and Winnie. She is survived by her 2 brothers Melvin (Leroy) and Ed Brady. Her 4 children Brian (Will), Ron, Diane (Kevin) Thompson, and Brenda (Alec) Buckner. Merts 4 sons Sherman, Daniel (DeeAnn), Brett, and Shannon (Stacy). She had 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be Saturday, November 8th, form 1pm until 4pm at the Temrowski Family Funeral Home, 500 Main Street in Fenton, MI.
