Lois Binge Chapman, age 96, died Friday, October 30, 2020. She was born June 8, 1924, in Galva, Illinois. Her parents Harold L. Binge and Adeline Curtis Binge; brother Harold C. Binge and sister Marjorie Binge Lack preceded her in death. Lois graduated from Galva High School and earned a degree in vocal music from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. After teaching for a year at a private school in Virginia, she received vocal tutoring from a faculty member of Juilliard School of Music in New York City. In 1953 she went to teach in Howard City, Michigan, where she met and later married Lyle Chapman. Acquiring a Master’s degree in education from Michigan State University in 1970, she taught elementary school music and then middle school English in Fenton until 1992. Lois’s passion in life was classical music, and until her final illness she never stopped enjoying it and working to improve the effective use of her vocal talent. In her younger years she moved and inspired many as she shared her beautiful soprano singing voice. In later life she was also an ardent reader and thinker in historical, political, economic and literary areas she had previously missed. She is survived by Lyle, her husband of 66 years; son John (Peggy) Chapman of Cohasset, MA; daughter Sarah (Bill) Koch of Bellevue, WA; and son Phillip (Laura) of Las Vegas, NV. A daughter Martha (Hal) Bidlack preceded her in death. Ten grandchildren survive: Christopher (Angela) Bidlack, Sarah (Ben) Boera, Amanda Bidlack, Mark (Morgan) Chapman, Cecelia Chapman, Anne Chapman, Alexander (Katrina) Chapman, Heather Chapman, Emily Koch and Madelyn (Jordan) Soltman. She also leaves six great grandchildren. According to Lois’s wish, there will be no funeral service. She requested that after her cremation, her ashes be deposited in the Colorado Springs Park where daughter Martha’s ashes lie. Memorial gifts may be directed to Heartland Hospice, 6211 Taylor Drive, Flint, MI 48507, from whose staff Lois received compassionate and skillful care through her final months.
