James A. Aho Obituary
The world became a quieter place when James Arthur Aho, of Hartland, Michigan, left us on May 23, 2026, after fighting a fierce battle with cancer. Jim personified the Finnish concept of sisu, which translates roughly as stoic determination, grit, resilience, and hardiness in the face of adversity.
Raised in Southfield, Michigan, Jim was the youngest of four children. He grew up in a house his dad built, which is where his love of the outdoors began. There, he learned to play hockey on backyard ponds with his family and friends, raised and showed chickens with his brother at state fairs, helped his mom tend to the vegetable garden, and enjoyed many family camping and fishing trips to Forest Lake and the U.P.
Jim was relatively young (17) when his father passed. He had several good role models to help him develop as a young man. He enjoyed his welding classes at school and apprenticed with his teacher. Following in his brother’s footsteps Jim pursued installing phone and computer systems. Additionally, later in life his easy-going manner made him a natural in caring for horses and alpacas. Jim had a creative knack and would see something he wanted to do and do it. This is so clear in his his wonderful wood carvings, drawings, and inspired ideas and gadgets.
Jim and his wife, Donna, moved to the Parshallville area a few years after marrying and spent their life surrounded by their love and the beauty of nature. They had a particular affection for dogs, which they called their fur babies. Over the years, Abby, Sarah, Jodi, and Ailee, whom they treated as kids, brought immeasurable joy into their lives. All were very happy, loving, and spoiled yellow Labradors with big, round bellies as proof.
Jim was wonderful with children due to his kind and patient nature. As a teen, he often cared for his nieces and nephews and took pleasure in teaching them what he knew, particularly about bow hunting, fishing, skating and so much more. As an adult, he was still a kid at heart, and loved discussing cartoons with nieces and teaching neighborhood children about antlions and other novel outdoor activities.
Jim was an avid hockey enthusiast, and his passion for hockey included watching the Carolina Hurricanes and Sebastian Aho (no relation that we know of). He and Donna traveled to North Carolina multiple times to cheer on the Canes at live games and enjoy its beaches and cities. If you listen carefully, you can probably still hear him yelling GO CANES!
Jim became more passionate about his Finnish heritage over the years. He had fond memories of the sauna at his Aunt Vi's and Uncle Jiggs in Ironwood, including the refreshing lemonade after. He enjoyed being part of the Finnish community and eventually had his own sauna.
Jim and Donna enjoyed traveling together and truly appreciated the beauty and laid-back pace of Maui on their 20th anniversary. Jim was fortunate enough to make two trips to Alaska, including a week deer hunting with his brother on Kodiak Island. And of course, there were the trips to the U.P., especially the Porcupine Mountains and Little Girls Point, which were some of the greatest joys of his life. Most recently, Jim went on fishing trips with his brother, nephew, great-nephew, and cousins, creating even more wonderful memories.
While traveling brought joy, Jim was just as content at home with friends and family. Jim was surrounded by family when he passed and is survived by his beloved wife, Donna Aho, sister, Cathy Dragich, brother, Ken (Mary) Aho, nephew, Jeff (Sara) Hunsaker, nieces, Lisa Hunsaker, and Kristen (Kyle) Smith, as well as many more loving relatives. He is predeceased by his parents, Edward and Shirley Aho, sister, Deborah Hunsaker, and brother-in-law, Larry Dragich.
