Celebrating the Life of Gary Leigh Shepard
With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Gary Leigh Shepard on Monday, May 19th, 2025, in Clarkston, Michigan. A beloved brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Gary's warmth, humor, and adventurous spirit left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Born on July 13th, 1939, in Gaines, Michigan, Gary was the third of four children welcomed by Leone and Cyril Shepard. Sharing a birthday with many family members in the cherished July 13th “birthday club,” he embraced life's milestones with the same enthusiasm that defined his character.
Gary was a proud graduate of Gaines High School, class of 1957. He went on to build a fulfilling 35-year career with General Motors, beginning as a Hand Arc Welder and advancing through roles in Industrial Engineering, Safety, Materials Management, Facilities, and more. He was known for his unwavering positivity, often saying he "never had a job he dreaded going to." Following his time at GM, he continued to share his expertise as Manager of Mechanical Trades at Miami University of Ohio, retiring in 2002.
Education was a lifelong pursuit for Gary. His persistence and dedication led him to Central Michigan University to earn his Bachelor of Science in Management and Supervision in 1975, followed by a Master of Arts in Business Management with concentrations in Behavioral Science and Finance in 1979. Fire up chips!
An adventurer at heart, Gary found joy in the great outdoors, embracing hobbies such as hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, sailing, running, biking, traveling, and chasing live music. His love for life was infectious—he made friends wherever he went, always armed with a good story and a mischievous sense of humor.
Gary is survived by his sister, Beverly Walker; ex-wife, Kristin Shepard; daughter, Karen (Bill) Trosko; grandchildren, Cammie (Jan) Kaiser, Kyle (Jessica) Adolph, Joey Trosko, and Kayla Hensley; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie & Bryson Adolph, Koda & Quinn Kaiser; as well as many beloved family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Margaret Smith, his brother Neil Shepard, and his daughter, Cheryl Shepard.
To honor Gary’s incredible life, two celebrations will be held:
Friday, May 30th at 11:00 AM at Little Traverse Inn, 149 E. Harbor Hwy, Maple City, MI 49664
Sunday, June 8th at 1:00 at 5543 NW 25th Loop, Ocala, FL 34482
In lieu of flowers (there is no ability to accept them at either location), the family requests that donations be made to Kimberly’s Center at 2800 NE 14th Street | Ocala, FL 34470, https://kimberlyscenter.org, an organization dedicated to helping children impacted by abuse and neglect—a charity dear to Gary’s heart.
Gary’s spirit will continue to live on through the cherished memories, laughter, and love he brought into the lives of those around him. His legacy remains a testament to a life well-lived and deeply loved.
