Cyrus Samuel Lazar, age 94 passed away on April 5, 2022 in Ft. Myers, Florida. He was the youngest of three sons (The Saul-deceased and Calvin) born to Samuel and Nancy Lazar (Assyrian Immigrants) of Flint. He was the beloved husband of Sophie (Branoff) Lazar who preceded Cyrus in death in 1996. He was father to children Rebecca (Bruce Watson) Lazar, Christina (Michael McGinn)Lazar and Katherine (Clark) Senter. Cyrus was a loving Dedo and is survived by 8 grandchildren: Emmanuel, Seraphim, Amelia, Augustus, David, Oliver, Francis and Eliot.
Cyrus was born on March 14, 1928 in Flint and graduated from Flint Northern High School where he was active in Music and was a member of the Cheer Team. He later served in the US Army during the Korean War, and after his service, pursued his dream of a musical career in New York and Chicago. He studied opera, appeared off-Broadway and toured with productions of various musicals including South Pacific.
Cyrus eventually returned to Flint and joined the family business, Samuel B. Lazar Construction. During this time he met his future wife, Sophie Branoff of Detroit and they were married In 1962. In 1963 he purchased the College Inn in downtown Flint and operated the business for 30 years, closing in 1993.
Cyrus was an active member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church (Burton), along with his loving wife Sophie. He later was a founding member of St. Mary Magdalene Orthodox Church (Fenton). Our dear Cyrus was a true raconteur and collected fine art, antiques, enjoyed the theater, and loved the culinary arts. His zest for life, sense of humor, compassion and love will be greatly missed. His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 11am at St. Mary Magdalene Orthodox Church, 2439 S. Long Lake Road, Fenton. Visitation will be; Sunday 5-7pm, Monday 3-7pm & Tuesday 10am until the time of service at 11am. A Parastas Service will take place Monday evening at 7pm. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery, Flint. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Flint Soup Kitchen.
