Alton Grant Wells, age 89, of Howell, MI passed away on November 15, 2022. His grandson Kamo held his hand, comforted and encouraged him as he made the transition. Born on April 13, 1933 Alton was the only child of Russell Grant and Lila (Rogers) Wells.
He leaves behind his devoted daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Steve Westphal and daughter-in-law Charmaine Wells. Also surviving are his grandchildren Shawn Grant Wells, Tara Wells, Alicia (James) Chesney, M. Alton Blake (Jessica) Roberts, and Kamo Grant Roberts; great grandchildren Jordann Wells, Leith and Corbin Roberts, and soon to arrive Reginald Roberts; step great-grandchildren Leo and Olivia; great-grand pups Finn and Taco. In addition to his parents, Alton was preceded in death by his son Chris Grant Wells and his life long partner Mary Lou Leverenz. He will be missed by Mary Lou's family, especially granddaughter Sara (Bailey) Raymond.
Alton worked in steel manufacturing his entire life. In his youth he worked as a laborer at the company his father co-founded, Dearborn Fabricating & Engineering. After starting his own family and with the backing of his parents, he opened Weldcraft Fabricating & Engineering. Although he never stopped working in the shop, a large portion of his time was spent in product development and sales.
Alton enjoyed watching old movies and T.V. series, collecting and shooting guns and rifles (all types), drawing cartoon faces and geometric patterns, drinking beer with friends and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His true passion was flying. As an aerobatic pilot he flew in numerous shows and competitions throughout his life. Together Mary Lou and Alton built and flew their own Decathlon 180 until Mary Lou was no longer able to fly due to Alzheimer's.
Per his wishes, Alton was cremated with a memorial gathering to follow at a later date.
